First Appearance

A soul-clone of Faye Kizen and adopted daughter of the Hobbit Hole Gang. Definitely a normal if somewhat spacey young woman, and not an innocent bound inextricably to the most awful parts of the universe.

The Firestarter

The Successor Idol challenge in 2014, product of The Corruptor's twisted mind, created a miniature tournament between several abducted persons of The House in order that he could choose someone to elevate as an heir in place of the recently-fallen Hazel Ninegate. Contrary to The Corruptor's initial claims, the fighters were not the original persons; rather, they were full-soul clones, and when two-year-old power armor pilot Faye Kizen lost her round against another contestant, The Corruptor cast her into Interstice as he had all the other failures and thought nothing more of her. This revelation infuriated her caretakers, but they all knew her lost -- the idea that Faye might be rescued was unthinkable. The forces within Interstice would have torn the little girl apart. They mourned, they put their lives back together, and they were grateful they at least had the one child alive and well.

Thus, when a young woman in a ragged robe began roaming the House and the destinations of the Random Door, nobody made the connection. She appeared to be roughly fourteen years old, both non-verbal and illiterate, though she was social and slowly starting to pick up rudimentary language skills with the proper attention and care -- and every time she passed through the Random Door, her mere presence incited bouts of mass panic or hysteria, attributable to Mythos exposure. The girl seemed to have little awareness of any connection between the events.

This pleasant meekness came to an end when her path took her across Yaijinden. Yaijinden swiftly recognized her as his adopted daughter, and realized that she had somehow managed to survive her exposure to the Interstice. He was immediately suspicious of this miracle; someone or some thing would have had to intervene to protect her, and he had no reason to believe in the innocent motives of such a being. Moreover, he was one of the few who could perceive the unreality of Interstace woven within her body, and how she had little to know control over how she exposed others to it. Though he was in truth gladdened to see her, his hesitance was reasonably mistaken for rejection by Faye -- and this rejection triggered the dormant personality within her.

The Firestarter had awakened, and her mission to summon The King in Yellow by using the ancient play.

The Firestarter persona was constructed by a being only calling himself 'The Stranger', and their goal was to drag out the dreaming god Hastur from where he dreamt, hiding from the universe as a whole. The Firestarter's inherent connection to Interstice made her a challenging foe to pin down, the various persons who worked to stop her found an unlikely ally: the grimoire The King In Yellow, alias Rue La'Poignant et Fleur, whom The Firestarter had forced into her service. With Rue's help, the Firestarter was pinned down in confrontation; Yaijinden called upon his preternatural authority as The Widening Gyre to pry his child's soul from the Stranger's grasp, and the Stranger's connection to the mortal realm was severed with the intervention of Sailor Mimas. Without the Stranger in her head, the Firestarter persona collapsed entirely, leaving only a dazed Faye who mostly only remembered very much that she loved her Mamas.

Post The Princess in Amber

The girl that emerged from this experience was relatively harmless by temperament, and more formally re-adopted by Yaijinden, Celeste, and Persephone. The three parents collectively decided she needed her own name; Simon Kerrick suggested "Amber", which met with their blessing. Amber proved to be a quick study in re-integrating with the world, though this only initially happened with great caution. Her connection to Interstice, evinced through her green wings she might thoughtlessly unfurl the same way most people might idly stretch, made her terribly dangerous (and in fact placed her fairly highly on the Torchwood Threat Level Asessments) to show to others. Only after Yaijinden taught her how to pull them into herself and hold them there, despite the discomfort, did they consider socializing her with children her own age.

Thankfully, Amber proved to be a quick study. Within a year, she was haltingly conversational in English and Japanese, playing team sports with children her age with a preference for field hockey (though still home-schooled by an attentive facet soul of the Gyre); when she was eighteen, she actually spent a year in Canadian high school just to see if she liked it (she wasn't a fan and left after a semester). She still sees and hears things that most people that aren't Mama don't, but has learned that a naive, spacey smile and a voiced 'Sorry, come again?' go a long way to distracting more focused questions. As a coda, shortly after her re-emergence, Amber began calling The Corruptor her father -- somehow aware of his hand in her origin, but bearing him no ill will over what he did. The fallen Time Lord, having since turned a more repentant leaf, initially refused to accept her overtures for a guilty conscience, but Amber proved persistent enough that he promised to watch over her from afar.

Perhaps he does even now.

Amber's future is unwritten. Her preoccupations are socializing and playing youth league amateur sports; she has little interest in conventional higher education and no particular inclination toward learning a trade, but such is often the way of things with young souls whose fancy has not yet been caught. Her Mama estimates that Amber will likely enjoy either extended life or immortality due to the young woman's connection to the cosmic substrate of Interstice; if Amber is aware of this, she seems mostly satisfied and content with playing at being mortal like her Mama does.
