Plot

Waking up from a fitful nightmare, Matsuo finds himself in a bare and uncomfortable room, his shoes missing and his gun in his hand. Picking up a newspaper off the floor, he soon discovers that he is in Ethiopia. His train of thought is soon interrupted by the sound of shouting from the other side of the door. Before he can react, the door is broken down, revealing a pair of police officers who immediately train their gun on him. Unable to explain himself, Matsuo dives out the open door, using a canopy to break his fall.

Leading the police on a chase through the town, Matsuo hides in an alleyway. As he recovers his breath, he finds a wanted poster with his face on it. Shocked by this, he turns only to take a gun butt to the face. Waking up, he finds himself in a cell, along with a pick pocket named Asha. The thief explains that he overheard from the guards that Matsuo had apparently murdered a professor. Still groggy from the day before, Matsuo digs into his pockets, finding three scraps of paper with the words "Kor" "Kahesh" and "Path of Flame".

As he puzzles over the words, his thought process is interrupted by the sounds of panic and screaming from outside. Before the two can react, the entire wall of the jail is blown apart, Matsuo and Asha only being saved by a quick telekinetic field brought up by Matsuo. Scrabbling out of the rubble, Matsuo is horrified to see bands of dark cloaked figures slaughtering the inhabitants of the town. Although he attempts to stop them, he is soon overwhelmed, only being rescued when Asha rides in on a motorcycle, shooting several of the men. Though he protests, Matsuo is pulled up onto the motorcycle, the two riding rapidly away from the burning city into the desert.
