Background
Masaru Yoneda is a Major General in UNIT, seconded from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Born and raised in a military family, he is a seemingly by-the-book officer who is actually capable of astonishing breaches of military protocol and regulation when necessary to achieve victory.
Steadfast and unerringly ethical, he is a superb tactician whose aikido-like victories using small, highly-elite groups of soldiers to overcome vastly larger groups of enemies have earned him both the respect of his subordinates and the fear of his superiors, who hastened to second him to UNIT so as not to make themselves look bad in comparison.
He serves as one of the strategic advisory council members to UNIT Japan, but is becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the inhumane and "soulless" treatment of anyone branded a dissenter or a "terrorist" by UNIT soldiers in the post 911 atmosphere, and is pondering resigning his post and returning to civilian life.
