Simple Times
Boss, real name Jon Arnell, grew up on the colony of Qamal in the Ri sytem. This particular pocket of space is notable for the star's complete lack of planetary satellites. Only colonies, engineered and built by a variety of races, orbit the red star of Ri. Boss spent his youth, and much of his more mature years, on Qamal, one of the busiest colonies. Boss is blind, and has been since birth. His ancestors shared this trait, though he doesn't know much more of their heritage. He doesn't consider his lack of eyesight a weakness though, and is reputedly one of the most dangerous members of the current Infernus crew.
Just Business
The system's colonies exist because the system lies at a very lucrative point in space - interplanetary trade routes criss-cross the system, and were what eventually led to its creation. Where there is money to be made, power isn't far away. The original founding corporations of Ri's colonies formed a coalition government over the region. The coalition government handles taxation, defence, business regulations, and has enough red tape to travel around Ri's circumference. Nonetheless, the system soon became incredibly busy and crucially profitable for those who invested.
The Lai Dai
One of the original founders, the Lai Dai, were a very secretive organisation - the kind that tends to have their hand in most things, but their influence is either impossible to trace, or at best, hard to spot. Many things had been said about them, but to Boss, they were first and foremost his employer. Most contracts were fairly mundane, usually involving engineering or maintenance of passing vessels. Occasionally, though, business needs change.
The Lai Dai were well aware that the general public held little love for them, but respected them as a wise choice for investment, as they never really made any risky ventures. Shortly after Boss joined, his eyes were opened to a reality that was nothing like the perceived 'business model'. The organisation had many enemies, in rival corporations, rebellions from within, and more than its fair share of dark secrets. The Lai Dai were not really that far away from the likes of the Mafioso of Earth, albeit on a larger scale.
The Fear and the Disquiet
Boss found himself commanding a small elite squad of individuals with their own callsigns and respective 'abilities' - not the kind you'd put on a resume. They earned the name The Fear, and became the main deterrent to those who would see Lai Dai dealt a low blow, whether they had inside help or not. The coalition government soon became another name for the directors of Lai Dai, with the entire system more or less acting on their whims.
This all changed when Boss discovered a dark secret that even The Fear would not protect. Soon a rebellion on a massive scale rocked the whole system. Just as the civil war broke out, The Infernus happened across the system. The rest is history, and now Boss is a permanent crew member aboard Haak's fleet.
The Flame Within
Few people in Haak's company believe in coincidence anymore, and though it's never really been fully explored, it seems as if Boss may well be another Flame Knight. Haak and Boss aren't known to have ever entertained the possibility publically, and out of mutual respect for each other they don't ask sensitive questions about their past lives. Rumour suggests that his blindness is negated by an acute sense of spatial awareness - as if he can feel his surroundings, and somehow use this knowledge to bend them to his will.
