An interpretation of Siahai's cog

When the universe was young and the old ones roamed, a tool was produced to study life in varying stages. It could accelerate or reverse a life along its various stages and possible lines of growth. The results of this experimentation contributed to the progression of life and well being among many mortal races, but were also frequently turned to inhumane, destructive uses (the Old Ones seeing little importance, worth, or danger in unleashing such perils among mortal creatures). Although the cog was buried by an ancient, long-dead race and deliberately forgotten by its protectors, the energies and laws set in motion by its creator are occasionally responsible for the rare rapid evolution or degeneration of peoples, tribes, nations, and even entire species.

The cog, named for its creator (whose nature was burned from history by the cog's protectors), exists in several dimensions beyond the visible three, which gives it the appearance of being both smooth, sharp, spherical, a single whole, and several interlocking pieces simultaneously. It is currently in the hands of Lady Mimas, who managed to surmount the hidden vault's defenses without knowing what was concealed within (but knowing that anything that well protected must be valuable). She has discerned at least the basics of the cog's operation, though has not made any use of it that the Hotel has seen, and has temporarily set it in one of the spears of Nenkadu.

It is possible that the evolutionary power that humans call Spiral Energy is Siahai's cog in proper action. Those few who both know of the cog's existence and study the future also believe that a chip from the cog is the key component of a Core Drill, such as the one found by a young boy named Simon in Jeeha Village.
