Spiral energy

Spiral energy is the preternatural energy that is responsible for shaping the evolution of nearly all life in the universe. Most who know about spiral energy under stand it as a force that acts subtly within biological evolutionary processes, impelling shifts towards creating bipedal, sapient creatures over the course of hundreds of thousands of years; others believe it to be the vital energy of mortality itself, born to die only to create a greater place for its successors.

Demeanor

For eons and eons, common knowledge of spiral energy held that its sole significant impact on the cosmos is that it propels and directs the evolution of species toward humanoid forms. It is detectable in trace, minute levels in any being from an evolving species (which means that spirits, ghosts, demons, angels, robots, and other creatures that cannot reproduce of their own volition cannot channel it), and found in elevated levels in any creature possessing a helical genetic structure.

As more and more Core Drills (see below) make their way across the cosmos into the hands of those who can use them, the educated opinion on spiral energy is that it is the ultimate in "bullshit omg wtf hax."

Nature

The existence and origin of spiral energy is linked to a device known as Siahai's Forgotten Cog. An artefact of primordial design, the Cog's most infamous function was directing spiral energy to specific ends, rapidly accelerating the evolutionary processes of a (group of) given being(s) to the wishes of its wielder. Because the Cog's energy tolerances were beyond easy measure, and because of the Cog's tremendous capacity for mischief, no serious attempt was ever made to destroy it; instead, it was sealed away and deliberately forgotten by most species after its mysterious creator was destroyed, in an attempt to ensure it was never used again.

Of course, this being the universe we live in, this was not to last forever.

In 2014 CE, the Cog was discovered by a Human by the alias of Lady Mimas, who quickly discerned that the Cog would be of use in her attempt to transcend mortality entirely. She successfully determined that the energy of the Cog was less than that contained by seven dead universes, shattering the Cog into countless pieces with the sheer scope of the transformation involved. However, these fragments of the Cog still retained significant power to channel spiral energy; each fragment exists within a small device called a Core Drill.

Currently, the only known Core Drill to exist in the proximity of the Hotel is in the hands of Yaijinden, who seems to be carrying it strictly to bequeath it upon someone capable of using it.
