Renpha Astalion is a girl who recently earned her full citizenship within the Van Saar Federation after completing her term of Federal Service within the Imperial Guard. A bout of extremely bad luck resulted in her losing ALL of her money and rather than face the shame of admitting it to her peers, she's taken on a job at a maid cafe in order to regain some sense of dignity. Unfortunately that's not going entirely well for her because she's not exactly having the easiest time fitting in on Earth.
Childhood
Renpha was born in the hold of a troop ship belonging to the Imperium of Man. Both of her parents were Cadians, meaning that in the proper tradition of Cadia Renpha herself was immediately inducted into the Imperial Guard the moment she was born. Since both of her parents were part of the Cadian 339th Regiment, her whole upbringing revolved around military training. When the Cadian 339th was amalgamated into the Necromundan 8112th (Van Saar) regiment following a particularly severe campaign when she was only four or so years old, her whole world was soon turned upside-down when both of her parents died in the infamous Battle of Tiberius that saw the merged regiment nearly destroyed. When the Necromundan 8112th finally turned against the Imperium during the Unmei Wars, Renpha became a ward of the Enclave, as the newly-established Van Saar Nation made certain to take care of their own.
The Zealot Wars
When Renpha was barely 14, the forces of the Alliance invaded the Enclave and attempted to destroy everything and everyone. Since the Enclave was very much a militaristic society, she'd already received the basics of combat training by the time she was twelve. Picking up a weapon and participating in the fight, Renpha participated eagerly in the battle. Her most vivid memory of the battle was finding a wounded female Alliance soldier who happily asked her for assistance, believing that since she was a child AND a girl that she'd automatically help - Renpha shot the soldier in the head with a laser pistol without hesitation. From that day onward Renpha served in every stage of the Zealot Wars: against the Tyranids, against the Necrons and Chaos, against the Alliance, and finally fighting against the Zealots themselves once the extent of the corruption and deceit became known.
Her final part in the War came when she joined the combined forces that fought their way onto the Ravager to put an end to Subject:Iago's genocidal attempt at apotheosis. During the boarding action Renpha witnessed first-hand what had happened within the ship and it took all of her courage and willpower to avoid breaking under the strain. Eventually, she returned home to Egae, battered in mind, body, and spirit, but not broken.
An End to Service
Renpha was part of the Imperial Guard regiment assigned to the defense of Ahkibara during the trial of Hazel Ninegate. When Ninegate triggered the explosions that devastated the entire area, Renpha was one of the many thousands of soldiers who immediately reacted to save as many injured and endangered civilians as possible. At one point she rushed into a burning building, her hostile environment suit granting her significant protection against the heat and flames, and managed to herd several people outside to safety. Unfortunately, she remained inside too long and the floor collapsed underneath her, dropping her into the apartment beneath and knocking her out. She was soon found by other Guardsmen that got her to safety, but she'd already sustained serious burns to both of her arms. After she began to recover, Renpha was informed that after completing a full five years of service in the Imperial Guard she had fulfilled the terms of her service and earned full citizenship within the Federation.
Once again, fate threw her a curveball when she gambled away ALL of her money not long after recovering from her injuries. Rather than ask for help or admit her mistake, she's chosen to remain on Earth to earn the money to arrange passage back to the Federation. She currently now lives with two of her coworkers at the Sakura Neko Cafe (a maid cafe), Teika and Kimiko, neither of whom believe that she's a soldier from another world and in fact think she got her brain scrambled in Ninegate's attack.
Current Situation
Renpha is a girl whose life would probably make an amusing comedy manga or anime right now. Having spent her entire life living within the Imperial Guard, especially as a Cadian, she's unused to anything else. Currently she's experiencing a very unusual mixture of PTSD, culture shock, and otaku exposure that makes everyone around her think she's the Konata of online gamers. At her job she's quite popular because of her toned figure and exotic looks. Everyone, including her roommates, think she's British despite the fact that when she's really upset she starts swearing and cursing in a completely alien language (Low Gothic). Despite her quirks, her roommates hold Renpha is high regard, especially since her knowledge of basic mechanics and electrical skills enable her to fix appliances without difficulty. Many customers LOVE watching her fix broken machines and electrical wiring since she'll get to work on doing so in the middle of the cafe in a full maid outfit, guaranteeing MANY steamy photo opportunities.
Lately Renpha has taken to wearing Nekomimi ears. She frequently forgets she's wearing them though, and the ears themselves have adjusted to her so well that her roommates sometimes use them as a good way to determine her moods. When the ears start twitching wildly and erratically (like whenever she sees a Pachinko machine), it's generally a sign that she's about to whip out that collapsible stun baton out from underneath her skirt and whack something. Pachinko machines are NEVER safe in her presence.
Renpha has bullet scars on her left side and hip and burn scars on both of her forearms. The outfit she wears at work, which includes elbow gloves, completely conceals all of them.
Her roommates are convinced that Renpha's completely addicted to the following games: Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, Fallout 3, the World of Starcraft MMORPG, the Old Republic MMORPG, Battlefield 3, and the Mass Effect series. They're fully expecting that list to grow as time goes on.
