The Slayer was a solitary position, for many centuries held by a single woman under the watchful eyes of a council of men. This tradition held, until a few hiccups occurred in the late 1990s caused a few changes. As of 2018, there are at least 4,500 known active Slayers working throughout the world with the assistance of a reformed Watcher's Council.

History

Pre-History

When the Earth as we know it was still young, ancient, powerful demons known today as "Old Ones" walked the soils and swam the oceans. They chased off other beings of higher power and intelligence, but within a few millenia would be chased off. Many would die in wars they fought against each other, some would simply flee to other dimensions. Some would be hunted by a woman known only to them as the Slayer.

The first Slayer was created in Africa, some time after the supercontinent of Pangaea had split. A young girl was captured by three tribal elders, known as Shadowmen, and was forced to have a Shadow demon imbued into her being. This ritual gave the girl all the gifts she needed to kill demons and protect the innocent. She would travel the planet to do so, and would eventually slay the last Old One left on this plane.

Despite her demon-like powers, the first Slayer was still human. No one is really certain how, and if a Slayer were to ask they wouldn't get a straight answer, but she would eventually die. With this death, the powers forced upon her would be passed down to another girl seen as fitting for the vigil. Thus, the Slayer lineage was born.

Within the Last Couple Centuries

As humanity advanced, so would the means of fighting the demons that remained on Earth and, with it, the methods of controlling the Slayer. Where the Shadowmen ended, the Watcher's Council began. The Council would stand to research demonic forces, develop methods of taking them down, and work to find potential Slayers in hopes of training them for their impending duties. While the main headquarters for the Council would be in England (and thus a large number of Watchers would hail from the land), they would establish bases of operation all over the world. This was seen as the best way to not only aid in the Slayer's vigil, but also easily keep an eye on the Slayer.

During these years, the lineage of Slayers would continue through the years, with girls all over the world "heeding the call" and taking the mantle. It would essentially be like a game of tug-of-war - sometimes humanity would prevail thanks to the actions of the Slayer; sometimes it would be a miracle that our species could remain ignorant cattle despite the death all around.
