While Lupa from Xcheamo and Terra are physically the same, there are many aspects of their lives which differ due to their location. This page will try to explain the more important differences.

Coming to Terra

The Lupa first came to live on Terra about 5,000 years ago, prompted by the overpopulation of their planet. This caused a crises point due to the fact that Lupa become highly strung when crowded and under prolonged crowding often snap with violent and bloody endings. They scouted places on Terra and settled with various peoples around the world who accepted them and agreed to live alongside them. Virtually all of the Lupa on Earth today are descended from these groups. Vilya's situation is extremely rare, in which her parents came to Earth from xcheamo.

Living on Terra

Today, more Lupa can be found among tribal peoples (Native Americans, Tribal Africans, Aborigines, etc.) than among other types of people. This is most likely because they tend to believe in earth and animal spirits and things of that nature and find mystery rather than fear in things they may not understand at first. Very few Lupa are Bedoins, Gypsies, or stray.

For Lupa living on Terra, there are a few things they can expect that are different from those living on xcheamo, starting with life expectancy. Terran Lupa generally live to 120-135, a good 15 years or more less than Lupa living on xhceamo. This is due to factors such as Terra not being their homeworld, and the constant vigilance they usually keep regarding their safety--added stress. Many of them have naturally eat like the culture that they are in, rather than what xcheamo Lupa eat.

Physically, a Terran Lupa will try to fit in with Humans if they are around them on a regular basis. Many of them, like Eiry, use a product that softens their hair, and some will wear long sleeves all year or tell people they shave their arms. Others learn to grow just enough fur in skin to appear to have body hair, but this is difficult to maintain for long periods of time.

Another major issue is that living on Terra will usually force a person to choose between fur and skin. They will eventually spend nearly all their time in skin, or go in the other direction and try to find a "fur pack" to join. These are rare, and they live their lives in fur, traveling and migrating similarly to a pack of wolves, although of course they keep their full sentience. Some Terran Lupa, since their families have "always been here," have come to endorse the idea that you are one or the other, rather than both.

Lupa expect to be taught Lupa at home, and to not use it when out in the world. They may or may not be taught Lupa writing, and if not will use whatever alphabet they know to spell out the sounds when writing in Lupa--if they dare to do so at all. They also expect that every other Lupa does their job in protecting the species in regard to Humans and Hunters, and in any other way that will avoid trouble. It's also important not to take children out in public until they're old enough to know when they can and can't change. While their mother may be able to control this, they don't like to risk it. Most Lupa children are home schooled, or not sent to school until middle or high school.

Terran Packs

Terran packs operate differently than xcheamo ones by necessity. While there are differences throughout the world, most Terran packs are in remote or more isolated places, such as forests, the foot of a mountain, or a desert tribe. In the Western world especially, most members contribute to the pack business, such as an inn (both the Sano's home pack and Eiry's run inns), a shop like Floral Heaven, or a ranch or farm (Fionn's pack, the pack in Provence). All members are expected to do something to help run the business or otherwise contribute their resources to the pack welfare. A great majority of packs have between 30-50 people, with somewhere between 2,000-2,500 packs in total.

Packs on Earth are also usually much closer and more tightly knit than those on xcheamo. Hunters are mush more real for them, and they believe strongly in safety in numbers. Loyalty is therefore much more important, and adherence to a Leader's orders. Many Lupa would rather put up with a problematic but strong Leader than chance being left on their own. This is also one of the main reasons that both nomadic packs and strays (but especially strays) are viewed with suspicion and generally deemed untrustworthy.

Generally, however, most people enjoy the closeness of their packs, and don't travel outside of them on their own. This has the effect that everyone knows everyone--there is less privacy, which most people will put up with for safety. With the invention of the internet, Lupa have increasingly kept in contact with others through super-secret email and social networks, and these means are often used to find a mate, especially in smaller packs where nearly everyone is blood related.

While many Lupa interact with non-Lupa daily without any problem, when it comes down to it, they usually do view them as outsiders, and don't set out to become close to them. Some packs will home school their children, while others send them to school. Some packs are more isolationist than others (like the Sano's home pack), and some are much more inclusive and open to others (like Eiry's home pack). Sometimes a non-Lupa child may be adopted in the right circumstances, or a Human may befriend a Lupa and join a pack, although both of these instances are rare.

Terran packs are often very complicated in regard to family connections, as members do not move around nearly as much as xcheamo Lupa do. Therefore, most members of a pack will be connected by blood or marriage. When the factor of age is considered, things can get even more complicated. For instance, Eiry's mentor and close friend Nanette is the same age has Nanette's aunt, Lauren, because Nanette's parents had her young while Lauren's parents were more toward the middle of their life span. Overall, it is not unusual to have siblings, aunts and uncles, or cousins who are significantly younger or older than you.
However, Nanette and Eiry also became family when Sali & Jake became mates, as Lauren is Sali's mother in law. Sali & Jake's union also elevated the Kortan family within the pack, as they are now directly tied to the pack's Leader.

While many Lupa travel within their home area, traditionally very few travel longer distances, although with the inventions of the modern world, theirs is also expanding. However, most long distance travel is still done by mixture of gates and whatever other modes are available to a given person. Given their usual health and forms, it's not unusual for Lupa to travel long distances on foot, whether in skin or fur.

Eiry, being close to the Tokyo gate while her home pack is also close to a gate, travels on foot to the gate, transfers, and completes the trip on foot. However, individuals from packs further from gates will walk, drive, take a train, etc., to the gate, and then do the same on the other side to get to where they're going. Often in these cases, trips must be planned to avoid full moon while one is in populated areas, and as to what kind of transportation is available. One must have enough money to pay a cab or rent a rickshaw, or arrange for someone to meet them with a car.

Taking a Mate

Taking a mate on Terra is usually more complicated, especially depending on where on Earth one lives. While simply making a bond is fine, and other Lupa will certainly recognize it, places with more legalization usually lead mates to at least have a courthouse wedding so that their union is recognized by the state.

As with Human couples, there are all kinds of wedding celebrations among Lupa, from the big fancy wedding to the quiet affair at the courthouse. In the case where this might pose complications, it is possible in some situations for the Office to arrange paperwork for a couple, as was done with Miara and Taki.

The Office

The Office is an organization run by a pack in Maine that acts as a go between for Terran Lupa. Much like Torchwood, they have a front business. As the world became more technological, they began as a central point for falsifying legal records, such as birth or death certificates, to fit the Human lifespan. As time and technology advanced, they also began collecting donations for packs or other Lupa in trouble, serving as matchmakers, and can change all kinds of official government papers.

Their two most important functions (besides paperwork) at date are helping the Hunted (they also maintain a list of known Hunters), and running the Lupa only internet hubs. At the moment, there are two: one for matchmaking, and one listing global news, packs, and locations. These are extremely difficult to get into, as one must be fluent in Lupa and pass all of the identity checks.

Zaira was quite familiar with several workers at the Office, when she was young, and Miara is also somewhat familiar with them, as they fit into her budding plans for Lupa on Earth. The head of the office is the only regular Lupa out there who knows about HK, and this person takes care of her funds and often arranges supplies for her.


Hunters are most common in societies where tolerance isn’t valued. There is a long history of fearing Hunters, and in modern day, fear and Hunters are synonymous. All Terran Lupa know that Hunters are to be feared, and coming face to face with one is death. Because Hunters dedicate their lives to killing Lupa and put in the time and practice it takes to do it, very few Lupa know enough fighting techniques or have the skill to defeat a Hunter. This is why most Lupa on Terra live in isolated communities, and going stray is usually frowned upon—it’s considered the same as inviting trouble. For a Lupa to reveal themselves to a non-Lupa is one of the ultimate betrayals, and most Lupa consider it the same as making a Hunter. There is a separate page with more information on Hunters.

Changing Others

Most Terran Lupa rarely associate closely with Humans, but some develop long and lasting friendships with a particular person or group. Even then, few Lupa would betray their species by revealing themselves without having a long, strong, and close friendship with the person. A highly astral person might be an exception, as they would be much more likely to tell if a person is likely to become a Hunter.

Friendships with Humans are seen as dangerous, although a pack would usually have no problem accepting a Changed Lupa--they are now Lupa, and have as much to hide as everyone else. However, the Lupa who Changed them may still often be viewed with suspicion. After all, one doesn't really know how someone may respond to discovering the Lupa--even if one of their closest friends is one. This person has willingly entertained the fact that they may be creating a Hunter in revealing themselves, and gone ahead with it. They might be willing to do this again, and that makes most Terran Lupa very nervous.

When Changing someone, that Lupa is then responsible for teaching the new Lupa about what they are, their new culture, how to fight and hunt, and how to behave with other Lupa. While a pack will certainly help with it, it is the main responsibility of that person, especially if there are problems or particular work in certain areas is needed.

Astral Training

Unlike xcheamo, training for astral people and Speakers on Terra is rather inconsistent, as most do not travel to find a mentor with similar gifts or complimentary personalities. There are often Speakers who have not been well taught in certain areas themselves, and some Speakers do not pursue skills or talents outside of their insight to others as is used for counseling. Training is especially spotty for astralgia, as they are unlikely to find a mentor without relocating for periods of time. As power isn't necessary for counseling, most Terran Speakers chose to either not train those abilities, or self train. However, the group behind the Astral Seminar is trying to change this, and have already done much work to promote connections between Speakers.

Eiry, Vilya, Edar, Kai, Altonno, Fionn, Gaetano, and Nima are all Terran Lupa, and Zaira started out as one.

Miara, HK, Vinxcha, and Valeria are all xcheamo Lupa.

All of the Lupa who attend astral seminar are Terran Lupa.

Lupa have been on Earth for 5,000 years, so they have adapted to look like the people where they live, especially with skin and hair tones. A pack in China will look Chinese, one in Africa will look African. A traveling pack would probably have the general features of the area they travel in, such as Asian or European or Arab/Bedouin. I’m not sure what percent in modern day would be gypsies or Bedouin, etc., but it is considered safer not to draw other people’s attention. One would be more likely to find such packs in cultures where such groups are still accepted, such as in deserts or possibly Asia. I know there is a lot of stigma attached to gypsies in the UK and probably Europe as well, so while there may be one or two packs there, they would still be a very small minority, say 10% (including strays).

Zaira (Rachel) lived in a traveling pack in America for a while when she was young, but it probably doesn’t exist yet. They traveled on motorcycle and did seasonal picking and landscaping work, lived out of cheap motels, and pooled a lot of their money. By definition it was very liberal and one could come and go from this group.

Again, a very small percentage of Lupa are strays. One can choose to live this way, or be kicked out (like Edar). You get kicked out for being a danger to the pack. Edar decided to stay in Tokyo rather than go home to his pack, so the Leader kicked him out and told him not to return, as he might have already attracted the attentions of a Hunter that might follow him home. A serious offence or threatening a pack’s safety can get one kicked out, or fraternizing too closely with a Human. Some of this will depend on the Leader’s judgment and how liberal or conservative the pack is. Anything like murder or extremely serious and premeditated exposure problems will get you killed. The Tokyo Lupa are not normal, and most other Lupa who know about them consider them stupid, foolish, a bad influence, etc., while it does give some others hope (although they wouldn’t dare it themselves). Most likely, as time goes on without much happening to them, some of this attitude may change.

Most strays, in particular one who is Hunted (has a Hunter after them specifically) doesn’t usually go to other packs or hang out with other Lupa. There is a stigma attached to being stray among Terran Lupa, and anyone Hunted doesn’t want to lead their Hunter to more prey. Most packs are very hesitant to take in a stray. The five currently living in Tokyo (Eiry, Edar, Kai, Miara, Vilya) are listed as living in Tokyo in the secret Lupa webspaces, but are considered strays by the main Lupa community.

While a hobo could certainly be Lupa, their lack of need for money for food, clothing, or shelter usually don’t make them desperate enough to go into large cities. A hobo in a place like Tokyo is not going to be Lupa unless there’s some all important reason for them to be there. In a small town, the shady looking guy passing through might be. There are a lot of options, such as seasonal work, living entirely in fur, or living as a homeless Human. It depends on the person, and the reasons they’re stray, or if there’s anything they want to accomplish. Less than 5% of Lupa on Earth are stray at any given time.

Right now in our canon, the number is probably somewhere around 8,000. Keep in mind that a pack size of 30—40 is average. Eiry’s home pack of 40 is large. The Sano’s home pack is probably about 25.The vast majority of Lupa couples have only 2 children—they replace themselves, and there can be 3 or 4—maybe even 5 generations alive at one time, depending on how closely or far apart children are born. Xcheamo and Earth are the only planets the Lupa currently live on. That won’t change until they’ve had a lot of contact with space faring races in the future (from xcheamo, not Earth). Matt’s character Riya who travels with Thrash is from a group that settled on another planet much further in the future. If you want details on that you should probably ask him.

For a normal mugging, it would simply depend if she was around. She is definitely much more concentrated on people who specifically set out to participate in genocide. However, if the mugger kills them she’d be more likely to take an interest as a side project. She does sometimes “have fun” with guilty death row inmates, notorious cases where criminals beat the justice system, or cruel and merciless underground gang leaders, human traffickers, arms dealers and things of that nature. It’s in her abilities and business to tell people’s natures, etc. And contrary to popular belief, there is someone above her. They just don’t need to be very involved.

Specific people only are immortal. At the current time, there are Moon, Altairtax, Urvenis, and HK. Urvenis is underground biding his time, and has Moon. The whereabouts of Altairtax are officially unknown. Different Lupa have different levels of myth/belief about this, and some believe different things. In the future, Urvenis will die, HK opts out, and Zaira and Jax will be added. There is a lot more information on the Lupa Immortals page. But that’s it. There are no other immortals. No more than 4 at any given time between all of them. So the percentage would be 4 out of roughly 20,000, which is 0.02%.
