However, being a silicate world Eradenia is incapable of developing any meaningful heavy industry.  The majority of the ecological damage caused by the nuclear war has regenerated over the past century and the Yoma themselves did little to poison the environment (although their extinction will disrupt it in the short term).  Already plans have been implemented to engage in limited planetary engineering in order to restore at least some of the oceans, introduce new plant and animal species, and redistribute the Eradenian population in such a way as to support the planet’s development into an Agri-world.  With Unmei currently being the sole Agri-world of the Federation, the idea of establishing a second agricultural world has been viewed as a strategic and economic necessity.

Description

The planet Eradenia is a warm, rather dry place consisting mostly of scrubland, rolling hills, deserts, and shallow seas, most of which are land-locked. The oceans used to cover two-thirds of the world’s surface, but a significant portion of them were evaporated during the previous age’s war. Some of the deserts are actually the floors of small seas that completely dried up. The overall weather is more active than Earth’s, with rainstorms and gales not being uncommon. Rain is especially prevalent during the cool "winter" season. Eradenia used to have a population hundred times greater than now, and the blasted and desolate ruins of abandoned cities are scattered all across the planet. Wildlife on the surface is rare: the Yoma hunted most species to extinction decades ago.

The Eradenians themselves are obviously “near-Humans” who could be easily mistaken for Terrans at first glance. Due to their world’s low-iron content, weak magnetosphere, and low ultraviolet radiation from Tau Ceti, the Eradenians are almost all genetically albinos. Their hair color tends to be white, grey, or metallic hues and their eye color usually ranges in greys, reds, and pinks. They often decorate their appearance with streaks of brightly colored dye on parts of their faces and hair.

Eradenia is not the original homeworld of their species; the lack of natural mineral wealth on a silicate world is a major obstacle to any evolving race trying to develop past the Bronze Age. The planet was originally a colony of a larger interstellar realm established several hundred years ago, but all contact was lost over 100 years ago and the Eradenians' technology began to slowly decline as a consequence.

Planetary Statistics

Local biochemistry: nearly identical to Terran standard.

Minerals: Scarce industrial metals, Ample light metals, Scarce petrochemicals. >Resource Poor< Used to be slightly higher, but most natural resources have been depleted by reckless exploitation over a period of 100 years.

Distance from local star: 0.55 AUs

Density: 1.9 (Silicate world)

Gravity: 0.9 G's

Climate: Tropical, Arid

Surface water: 46% coverage (used to be 66%)

Cultural Statistics

World Government: Previous world government was a Technocratic Oligarchy where 75% of the planet’s resources went to support 10% of the population. A coup instigated by the military ended that. Currently Eradenia is essentially under colonial/martial law as the Federation is focused on reconstruction of the planet’s infrastructure. Democratic elections are officially slated to be held on the very first day of 2019.

Technological Development

Physical Science: TL 7 High-energy physics understood. Knowledge of elementary particles and forces.

Material Science: TL 6 Versatile metal alloys. Knowledge of better materials like advanced composite laminates understood but exceedingly rare due to lack of local supplies.

Energy Production: TL 7 Fission power plants and radiothermal generators.

Information: TL 8 Global satellite communication. Widespread computer usage. Personal image transmission.

Vehicles: TL 7 Advanced automobiles. Jet aircraft hardly used due to lack of local fuel.

Weapons: TL 8 Caseless automatic weapons. Charged particle cannons exist but can only be mounted on massive vehicles or fixed sites.

Biological Science: TL 9 Advanced genetic modification possible on living, adult subjects. Combat-grade genetic enhancements were used to create an elite anti-Yoma force that proved to be very effective.

Medical Tech: TL 8 Full genetic screening and therapy in general use. Lasers and microprobes make surgery minimally invasive, allowing for great efficiency and rapid recovery.

Environment: TL 7 Urban planning allows for existence of ultra-dense cities with effective mass transit and recycling. Advanced weather prediction. Environmentalist ethics could have been implemented, but the previous government valued rapid adaptability over careful resource management, resulting in a lot of waste and squandering.

History

Over a hundred years ago Eradenia was devastated by widespread global warfare. Nuclear weapons devastated the planet’s environment, evaporating half of the oceans and releasing large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, while genetic warfare created millions of extremely dangerous new lifeforms that turned out to be entirely too adaptive and uncontrollable. The Yoma, as they came to be known, weren’t a single species but a vast assortment of gene-modified mutants all driven by the need to breed and feed on everything not related to themselves. As conditions steadily worsened in the decades after the official end of the war, the surviving Eradenians were forced to fall back into heavily fortified arcologies and metroplexes in order to concentrate resources and protect themselves from the Yoma (which came to outnumber them). At first the tactic worked and the Eradenians began to recover. Then forty years ago (1970s, Terran-relative) the “Oligarchs” came into power. While not an official group, the Oligarchs were a self-perpetuating very conservative faction within the government that dominated all political affairs. As the military continued to successfully keep the Yoma at bay, the Oligarchs began diverting more and more resources to their own use until the Eradenian government essentially transformed into a kleptocracy profiteering off its own people in order to maintain the status quo.

With more and more resources diverted, the containment against the Yoma began to progressively deteriorate. Several metroplexes were overrun and lost in the course of two decades, and without the space or resources to expand overcrowding and unemployment became serious concerns. Several elements critical to high-tech society were eventually exhausted (namely uranium, titanium, fossil fuels, and industrial-grade ceramics) resulting in a gradual decline in their overall level of technology. The number of successful Yoma incursions increased until the tunnel network that connected metroplexes and even parts of the metroplexes themselves were no longer safe.

The arrival of the Federation wasn’t viewed the same way by everyone: the military welcomed them with open arms, the civilian populace was cautious, and the Oligarchs openly resented the Federation’s ideals of socio-capitalism and “responsible government based on integrity and merit”. When the Oligarchs attempted to force the Federation offworld, elements within the Eradenian military (supported by the Inquisition and the Special Circumstances Regiment) initiated a coup and overthrew the government in a short-lived civil war in which the majority of the military joined in to overthrow the Oligarchs. The fighting lasted less than two weeks.

As of mid 2013 (Terran relative), Eradenia is a staunch supporter of the Federation. Its new government adapted very quickly to the idea of citizenship earned through military service. The general populace is highly supportive of the Federation with its promises of a minimum level of living for everyone that’s willing to work. The Federation is very consistent in keeping its promises and the rationing that had existed before under the Oligarchs has been greatly relaxed. The “guaranteed minimum level of living” ensures that no one starves or is homeless and provides a good incentive for everyone to work to earn their keep as well as move themselves up (because if people want more than the absolute bare minimum of anything they have to purchase it on their own). The reconstruction effort guarantees a literal 100% planetary employment rate for at least the next fifty years. Life within the metroplexes has become much safer than before, people can actually travel outside the cities once more (caution is still advised), and for the first time anyone can remember the fear of the Yoma has finally diminished.

The people of Eradenia have their world and lives back.

Current Situation

There are over 100 regiments of Imperial Guard deployed on Eradenia, engaged in an extermination campaign against the Yoma. The Eradenian military (now officially recognized as the Planetary Defense Force and sworn in for Federal Service) has been fully supportive of the campaign and vast numbers of Eradenians have been fighting alongside the Imperial Guard. Given the sheer multitudes of Yoma in existence, it’s been estimated that fully exterminating them will require upwards of ten years of continuous combat operations, but galvanized by offworld shipments of food, resources, and advanced weaponry the Eradenians have no objections. In fact, they consider it "payback" for the decimation of their own species.

The greatest gift of the Federation (at least in the minds of most Eradenians) has been the permanent assignment of the starship Valrigis to the Tau Ceti system. The Valrigis’ rating complement is made up almost entirely of Eradenians who consider even service as basic crew onboard the first starship ever under the control of their world to be a grand opportunity and honor. The fact that the ship is the most massive thing they've ever seen (a Dauntless-class light cruiser from the Imperium) makes many Eradenians feel that the ship is a symbol of their species' rebirth: swift, agile, and enduring.
