Chen Yakumo is, in appearance, a catgirl of child like proportions with brown hair, red eyes, and generally wearing a mop hat. From Gensokyo, she is the shikigami of Ran Yakumo, and a Youkai.
Character and Personality
Chen conducts herself like a young girl. She’s playful, carefree, and genuinely loves Ran and Yukari (although she always lampoons and ribs on Yukari every time the Grand Prix comedy competitions roll around). She can seem irresponsible at times except when Ran is concerned, in which case she’ll become highly motivated and focused.
Once upon a time, Chen used to prey on the Humans of Gensokyo, ambushing them whenever she could but it never actually accomplished anything: the Humans just sprayed her with water, dangled cat-tails in front of her to distract her, or outsmarted her in any number of ways. Over time, Chen took a cue from Ran and mellowed out.
Ran Yakumo
Chen is the shikigami of Ran Yakumo, but the way Ran behaves in regards to her you’d think that Chen is actually her daughter. Due to their relationship, she has a strong bond with Ran, and at a time Ran became very ill, Chen volunteered to get medicine for her, running all the way to Eientei by herself even though Yukari could have simply opened a portal. Yukari then tagged along at a distance to make sure nothing interrupted Chen’s trip to and from Eirin, partly to make sure Chen stayed safe, but also to give her a chance to feel like she’d accomplished something important.
Power and Abilities
Despite being a Youkai (specifically a nekomata) and a shikigami of Ran, Chen isn’t particularly powerful. She can use magic, but only at a fairly low level that is easy to overcome by a skilled opponent. Most of the time fighting her is hardly necessary: everyone knows that Chen hates getting sprayed with water, and catnip instantly distracts her. In many ways Chen behaves just like a cat.
Gensokyo
Just like Yukari and Ran, Chen is a well-known figure throughout Gensokyo. There’s hardly a single person who can’t recognize Chen on sight just by glimpsing her green hat and twin black tails. The cry of “CHEEEEEEN!” is equally universal. Whenever you hear it, it means that a Chen sighting has just occurred. Ran herself was the originator of that particular inside-joke, as she would often call out to Chen in that manner. Eventually it because something of a running gag within the Village.
Everyone in Gensokyo knows her. She sometimes visits the Village and even occasionally plays at Keine’s school with the other children. Chen has tried to make herself the leader of all cats in Gensokyo, but so far that hasn’t worked out nearly as well as she’d hoped, as the cats don't listen to her for very long.
The Langisters
In regards to the Onryo, Yukari’s “killer angel,” Chen is nervous. She’s seen first-hand the carnage he can inflict which is always awesome to watch but a little unnerving as well. The Kits, on the other hand, are a joy to be with. Chen will happily play with them any chance she can get, playing games with them for hours on end punctuated by catnaps and just lying around, which are things the Kits eagerly encourage her in.
