Saturnians were the predominate race on the planet Saturn. The population of the species was vast and even colonized many of its 60 moons. They were considered to be the most powerful, and potentially dangerous race in the Sol System.

Environment

Before the Fall of Silence; Saturn itself was a large planet with predominantly swamp-like environments. Due to the distance from the sun, the plants and wildlife relied on the planet's core for warmth, and the golden clouded skies would create a greenhouse effect, holding that warmth in. Light was usually produced through glowing spores, lichen plants, and mineral deposits like crystals and some ores. Saturn also hosted a variety of reptilian, mammalian, and avian creatures. Some predatory beasts were known to grow to enormous sizes, and would prey on Saturnians. Saturn also hosted a wide variety of flora as well, but due to the swampy soils throughout the lands, a majority of plants in the wilds evolved into predatory plants, and were the top predators on the planet. As a race, Saturnians endured many environmental hardships to become the hardened species that they were known for.

Biology

Saturnians were a bipedal humanoid race, very closely resembling Humans from Terra. Males averaged about 5'8" to 5'9" (68-69 inches), and it was extremely rare to see one near or at 6'0. Females averaged 5'5" to 5'6" (65-66 inches), and it was extremely rare to see one near or at 5'8". The average weight of a healthy and fit Saturnian was 180 lbs. for adult males and 145 lbs. for adult females. The natural hair color of a "pure-blooded" Saturnian ranged from silver to a dark grey. Any other hair color was considered a sign of an offspring from inter-racial breeding with a parent of another planet in the Sol system, but these rites were often reserved for the nobility. Skin color ranged from pale (Caucasian) to a golden tan. One of their most identifiable features are their sharp, striking eyes.

Anatomy

Skeletal System

The skeletal structure is twice as strong as a Human's. The Saturnian skeleton was considered a powerful internal armor that was a gift from Cronus to help protect them. The structure was most likely evolved due to the stronger gravity on Saturn. Comparably, the bone density could rival that of the human Neanderthal evolution, but more refined to a gracile body form. This internal system of bone was well fitted to the rest of the anatomy to provide a stable structure that would not break or bow easily. A Saturnian could take a beating, and as long as their vital organs were still in tact, they would keep on fighting.

If a Saturnian did manage to break a bone, it was an excruciatingly painful experience. The bones themselves were slow to heal, and in many cases, the individual would opt for limb amputation to end the pain. If a bone such as a rib were injured or broken, surgical removal of the broken bone was preferred. Those who opted to suffer through the pain of a slow healing bone were often left lame.

Muscular System

Muscle density was much heavier than a Human's, also believed to have been evolved due to the higher gravity of the planet. Saturnaians had the potential to be 2-times stronger than Humans, and that strength would increase if the Saturnian was enraged with adrenaline. Some would compare the muscle structure to an iron trap, specialized in explosive power and movement in an instant. On Saturn, a Saturnian would move no differently than an average Human on Earth, but when placed in a planet with lower gravity, the Saturnian must remain aware of their movements and activities so as to not injure others or over exert themselves.

Cardiovascular System

Saturnian blood is heavier and denser than that of a Human's. To compensate for the muscle structure, the body produces and pumps 3 times more hemoglobin through the blood stream to supply all the needed oxygen to the muscles so that they are able to remain in peak physical readiness, and it also feeds the muscles smoothly when the individual is under an adrenaline rage. This makes the consistency of their blood far more condensed and heavier than Human blood. On Saturn, their blood pumps through a powerful 4-chambered heart at a rate of 120/80, but on a planet with lower gravity their blood pressure would be considered at highly dangerous levels.

Immune System

The immune system of a Saturnian is fairly robust and can fend off most illness and viruses, and can be somewhat resistant to sedatives; however, they are extremely susceptible to venom and poisons. This is due to the nature of Saturn, where flora and fauna alike are rarely venomous, and more rely on physical prowess and strength to survive. The few things that are venomous or poisonous from Saturn are considered extremely dangerous, and so far none have survived attempting to harvest these creatures or plants. With little to no exposure to poisons and venom, and no available cure for them, Saturnians have no resistance to these harmful substances, and will generally succumb to its affects. In some cases, when exposed to the venom of creatures and plants of other planets, Saturnians have been observed to react similarly to a severe allergic reaction causing swelling, fevers, extreme pain, and even paralysis, be it temporary or permanent, depending on how soon they are able to get treatment from the local inhabitants...if there is any to be had. Without treatment, a stricken Saturnian may die.

Energy Regeneration

Saturnians are well known to have the fastest life energy regeneration of all races in the Sol system. It is believed that this is attributed to their origins as power amplifiers. No biological or scientific evidence has yet been determined to explain how or why they have this ability.

Behavior

Saturnians were social humanoids who lived in clans during their primal generations, and later evolved into larger, more civilized societies. Their evolution appears similar to that of Humans, but at a faster pace. Considering the hazards of the environment they were exposed to, a faster evolution permitted them to gain improved skills, abilities, and attributes that helped them survive and thrive despite the dangers.

Males

Males tend to be aggressive, and highly protective by nature. This gender of the species suffers from an emotional imbalance that causes them to literally become slaves of their emotions. Their emotional state has a hair trigger reaction to the stimulus or threat that is affecting them. They can fly into an almost berserker rage and focus on the cause, seeking its immediate destruction.

Males also have a strong sense of loyalty and tend to remain on a one-tracked mind. They are bigger and physically stronger than females, but they also tend to exert more energy and power at a faster rate.

Females

Females are more reserved, and gentle, but can become just as aggressive as a male if their offspring are threatened. This gender is very calculating and organized, and has a very dominant mindset. Females are very loyal to their families, and can be very nurturing and passionate lovers. Mothers tend to raise their offspring with a firm hand, but also an over abundance of affection. Females have stronger stamina and more endurance and thus have a more balanced expenditure of their energies.

Life Cycle

Saturnians carried on a life cycle similar to that of Humans. Due to living in such a hazardous environment, their bodies run on a higher metabolism to quicken their growth and maturity.

- Infancy is a very fast ageing timeline for a Saturnian. Infants start to crawl and walk around 4-7 months. Parents encourage teaching the infants to walk and run over crawling to ensure survival. Basic forms of speech are developed starting at 6-months. First year birthdays were an important occasion for an infant. Generally families would celebrate the first year of survival by giving the infant their first taste of meat, and provide gifts to help with the next coming year.

- Toddlers, around the ages of 2-4, will primarily stay near their mothers for protection and nurturing. They will occasionally accompany their fathers for guidance and teaching.

- Yearlings are the ages from 5-12. This is a critical age for youngsters, as their life will become more active and more independent from their parents, albeit still dependent on their parents and family. Their personalities start to develop more and they start to learn critical lessons from their parents to prepare them for maturity and adulthood. Hunting, crafting, fighting, and cooking are all taught to the yearlings during these times. They help with more menial tasks with their family and clans to start their contributions for the welfare of the clan.

- Adolescence is from the ages of 13-18. This is the time of maturing. The young start to become stronger and more independent, ready to strike out on their own and even start to seek out mates. Like humans, these youths are driven by their hormones and genetics that leads to more primal instincts. They become competitive, emotionally imbalanced, and are quick to react to any form of stimulus. Parents keep close watch over their youths, mainly because of the bonding rituals that can occur during this time. This is also the age when many youths can or will be injured or killed. Carelessness or rashness cause youths to be caught by predators, or severely injured during hunts or fights with other youths.

- Adulthood comes when the youths reach the ages of 19, their genetics start to balance out and many are bonded to a mate by this time. They are more attentive and aware, and are able to contribute more to the clans, or break off and start their own families.

- Elder ages are from 40 until death. Elders are rare since most Saturnians die young due to environmental hazards, predators, injury, or illness. In more modern times, these ages became more common with the developments of their security in society. Elders were always looked upon with high regard, and were sought after for wisdom and teachings by many clan leaders.

Courtship and Mating

Upon reaching maturity, the youths will start to go through very strong biological and emotional changes. Males seek out females to court them and compete with one another to gain her favor. Adults remain wary to avoid a premature bonding of youths, in case a female does not choose a male to be her mate. When a female chooses her mate, the male's emotional bonding ritual begins. The hormones and chemicals in his brain start to create a life long bond to his mate, leaving him only to have eyes and desire for her. In most cases, Saturnians are "life mates". They rarely look for, or find, a second love.

The bonding is considered a sacred and sometimes dangerous ritual since it will create the life bond to a female. Young males are monitored for symptoms of a bonding initiation when they start to reach maturity. It is fairly rare, but not uncommon. The Bonding could start as young as 10-years old for a male, or later when they are in their 20's. That is why parents are very wary of their sons to monitor their maturity and growth. An un-monitored male could bond to a female that does not desire or choose him, leaving him severely emotionally unstable and violent. If this occurs, the parents need to undertake measures to break the bond without causing harm to the young male. This can be a very traumatic event since the male is placed into isolation with his family, unable to see or reach the female he pre-maturely bonded to. Some bonded youths have fallen into such despair that they commit suicide when they cannot be with the female they bonded to. The family is there to prevent this tragedy from happening. It can take many months to break the bond, and as the male matures further, his body eventually accepts that he has no mate, and the bonding can be re-initiated when he is rightfully chosen by a female. These kind of bond-breaking events usually only occur for younger, not fully mature males. It would be the equivalent to "puppy Love" in humans, but to a more extreme scale.

If a male's mate dies, a male's bonding rarely releases, and he does not seek another mate. If a Female's mate dies, she has no bond but due to the level of her love for her desceased mate, and her instinct and devotion to her family, she will rarely seek a new mate.

After bonding to their mates, males will go through periods of a biological mating lust, usually once every five years where their bodies start over producing endorphins that stimulate pleasure and desire, driving them into a mating frenzy. The female will willingly satiate this desire at her leisure.

Saturnian genes are surprisingly compatible with the other races in the Sol, thought the inter-breeding practices wee usually only reserved for the noble caste. Saturnain females tend to have dominant genes, and most instinctively desire to live and raise their young on their home world. Most early historical relationships between Saturnians and other planets, the Saturnian females would insist on returning to Saturn with their mates and offspring. Some would go willingly, others wouldn't. Then the Saturnian female would usually take the offspring with them, without the consent of their mate. Saturnian Males tended to remain bonded to their inter-planetary mate and would not leave them. In later, more civilized times, those old instincts in females to return to Saturn have since ebbed away.

Gestation periods for Saturnians is about 8 Terran months. They will normally give birth to one offspring but will rarely also give birth to twins.

Languages

In the capital city and in the major continental places in Saturn, they would speak Cronian. The language is named after the God Cronus who is said to have made Saturn and its people. In surrounding areas, there would be sub dialects of Cronian, kinda like southern accents or Western accents.

In other continents, Chiro (Named for Chiron) would be equivalent to European. Theogo (Named for the Theogony) would be equivalent to Russian, Erinyes (Named for the Furies) would be equivalent to Asian.
