Jupiter is the fifth planet in the Sol system, between the asteroid belt and Saturn. It is a the largest planet in the system, a gas giant with over 60 moons and natural satellites. Its primary feature is a large red spot in the atmosphere, which is actually large storm that has never dissipated throughout the over one hundred years that humanity has been observing it through telescopes. Often hypothesized to be many centuries old, it rotates counter to the planet's rotation in the southern hemisphere. The horizontal bands across the face of Jupiter are the result of the world's rapid rotation. The darker colored areas are known as belts, and they are warmer than the lighter-colored regions, called zones. Principally made of hydrogen and helium, Jupiter has been measured as over 315 times as massive as the Earth, and more than twice as heavy as the combined weight of everything else in the solar system besides the Sun.

In Roman mythology, Jupiter was the king of the gods, and had power over the sky and thunder, and is often pictured with lightning bolts, which is featured in several of Sailor Jupiter's attacks. Her wreath of oak leaves, which appears in the manga, is also a symbol associated with Jupiter in Roman mythology.

More about Jupiter can be found on its wikipedia page.
